Don't worry, unless you decide to take out a paid subscription, nothing will change. You will still get all my posts.

Here's a good talk by Bari Weiss about why it is the subscription model that is killing journalism. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mQySYKPBKXk Listen. It works as a podcast.

Bari describes her job at the New York Times and how doing the journalism she was hired to do made her the target. Over and over, to some degree, paid substacks tend to go through the same process of mining a demographic for money. It's a good analysis. She now runs TheFP.com

I don't listen to podcasts. I might read a transcript

John I love your posts. I appreciate your need for subscriptions. I appreciate more that you also keep access free for people like me who are now on a fixed, very low income

That's all good.

However from my perspective. I follow various writers. I run websites. I put up with advertising. I think that m,y readers are intelligent enough to ignore the ads. I still believe in open source and free flow of information. I make my own Substack posts so short that it would not be worth it for anyone to subscribe. But good luck, anyway!

One rate? Flat rate? Already read LRB, Australia Institute, P&I. Twitter almost dead. LI overly full of "nature positive" nonsense. Joshua Rosenberg now charges for his Substance, with readership probably cashed up lawyers...so no longer working, what's the fair fee? ⚖️

I plan something a bit cheaper than the Substack default, and, just to restate, you won't miss any of my posts regardless. The aim is just for me to have full access to other Substack newsletters, so I can respond to them.
