The United States is (currently) a very unreliable partner. China is quite reliable--you can rely on it to assert its Monroe Doctrine over the entire region, including Australia. It would be nice if Australia+Japan+Korea+Indonesia+India+New Zealand+other ASEAN could collectively resist Chinese suzerainty. But none of these countries could do it on their own, and probably not in pairs or triplets, either. But is close military cooperation possible without a guiding hegemon?

John, there’s quite a bit of repetition in this post. It badly needs editing.
