Clickbait. Dangerous and irresponsible clickbait trying to attract the gullible, gormless and irrational. They probably succeeded as much of their content these days, across all media, is now aimed in that direction. Stan spent so much on sport all they can afford for the rest is the dregs and disasters others don’t want.

The essential question is whether we in Australia will encourage and assist the USA to defend Taiwan. There are those who say words to the effect that Taiwan is a province of China, so no, and those including JQ who are saying 'Don't worry about it; it won't happen'. There is a big overlap between those parties so what they mean is not to worry about it because they do not care. They may think that there is some kind of principle behind them but it is not a utilitarian one because no-one will be better off if China were to seize Taiwan. My impression is that there is still some misguided preference for China over the US hanging around from Vietnam war days.

They Chinese leadership tells us that they are getting around to seizing Taiwan. We know that the only thing that has ever stopped them has been US naval power. JQ argues that the military balance has tipped in favour of defence but he may be overconfident in his understanding of military affairs.

Taiwan is a great success for the democratic world. It achieved prosperity well before communist China ever did and without any of the horrors that communist China inflected on itself. Being democratic it is a force for peace in the world. It is a lesson for all Chinese people about what is possible for them.

Should China seize Taiwan its strategic power would be augmented and we can only fear what would happen next. China is not a friendly power; not to anyone including its own people.

The status quo is in Australia's interest and we should do what we can to preserve that. With the dysfunction that is prevalent in the USA, a clear message to the US administration and to the people of the US could do some good. It is not the time for free-riding.
