But it's the technology that's making the humans lonely. As far as being a companion, AI bots are already succeeding at that.

Elon's an interesting figure. His redeeming feature that arguably makes him better than other billionaires is that, at heart, I think he really is high on his own supply- certainly he does a lot that is conciously mendacious, but I think he really does believe the "we will become a multi-planetary species and live in a society like Iain M Banks Culture Novels but somehow still capitalist" story. I think he read a lot of science fiction novels and came to really, truly believe it. In a world full of billionaires who believe nothing- where Zuckerberg, for example, seems to use the phrase "superintelligence" to mean "something that can even more seriously addict people to watching short-form videos"- so the idea of a billionaire who actually has a vision is somewhat... refereshing? SpaceX has done genuinely impressive work, and this is not merely incidental to his vision.

But as is so often the case regarding virtuous features in a vicious man, they just make him worse. The fact that he really, truly believes in a Jetsons future makes him better at selling this stuff and inflating the hype bubble further. His genuine streak of idealism has allowed him to advance with less scrutiny some other things he believes, most notably, a pretty stock-standard racialist world view- white South African in the most derogatory sense. His tendency to grand visions has translated- Henry Ford style- into a penchant for conspiracism. Not least of his dangers is that, in addition to fooling foolish people into hype cycles, he makes wise people discount as mere hype the danger of- what I think at least- are very real, powerful and potentially destructive technologies, most notably AI.
